Lappeenranta is located on the banks of Saimaa Lake, in the southeast of Finland. According to 2011 data, there was a population of approximately 72 thousand people. It is located 30 kilometers from the Russian border and the city is located in the North Karelia region. Lappeenranta is the 13th largest city in Finland and has neighboring cities of Ylamaa and Joutseo. It is known as an international university city, with some of the most important universities of Finland in Lappeenranta.

Lappeenranta University of Technology and Saimaa University of Applied Sciences, between them have around 13,000 students from about 68 countries. At the same time, the city is also the commercial center of the southeastern region of Finland and is the meeting point of Russia and Europe. The region where Saimaa Lake is located in the southern part of the city, has developed the tourism industry and is the most visited city after Helsinki in Finland.
