About Surabaya

Surabaya, Indonesia's second largest city is the capital of the East Java region. To the east of the Java region, on the banks of the Mas River, the city is also on the banks of the Madura Straight. According to the 2007 data, the city has a total population of about 3 million; Suroboyoan mouth, an extension of Java language, is spoken in the city.

Because of the struggles during the Indonesian National Revolution, for most Indonesians, this city is referred to as heroes' city. The city is also known as the birthplace of the first president of Indonesia. The name Surabaya consists of a combination of the words sura (shark) and baya (crocodile). Of these two strong animal species shark represent the power in the sea, and crocodile represents the power in the land. The shapes of these animals are also used in the emblem of the city. The Adhiwangsa, The Via & Vue, Taman Beverly, Trillium and Water Place Residences are known as the highest skyscrapers in the city. A large number of shopping centers in the city can be seen as a major factor in Indonesians preference of the city for shopping. Flood disasters during rainy times can occur in many parts of the city due to clogged sewers. At the same time, low elevation of the city and the delta formed by the river are seen as causes of flood disasters. There are very green parks and wide hiking areas in the city, which can be described as a miniature of Singapore. Surabay's Zoo, Cheng Ho Mosque, Al-Akbar Mosque, Heroic Monument and the museums are among the places to be visited.
