About Colombia

The Republic of Colombia is located in the northwest of South America and is the fourth biggest country of the continent. Columbia is bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the north, Venezuela to the east, Brazil to the southeast, Ecuador and Peru to the south, Pacific Ocean to the west and Panama to the northwest. Colombia, which consists of three different regions, is the only country in South America with coastlines and islands along two oceans.

Colombia, which is a country founded and colonized by the Spanish under the command of Ganzola Jimenez de Quesada and Sebastian de Balalcozor in the early 16th century, was named after the famous explorer Columbus who discovered the South America continent in 1886. The country has approximately 33.5 million inhabitants and basically consists of four different ethnic groups. 7% of its population are Amerindians, 5% are blacks, 20% are whites and the rest are mixed.

Nearly 80 different native languages and dialects are spoken in the country whose official language is Spanish. The currency of the country is peso. Bogota is Colombia's capital and most populous city. Other important and developed cities are Medellin, Berangu, Santiago de Cali, Baraquilla, Cucuta, Buaramanga, Bello, Pusto, Neiva, Manizalles, Soledad and Cartagena.

Colombia, which is very rich in terms of underground resources, plays an important role among the countries that export precious metals such as petroleum, gold, platinum, emerald, coal, iron and limestone. Petroleum refineries, cement, tires, paper factories, factories processing nutrients and automobile and chemical factories established with foreign investments are also quite numerous in Colombia which is the world's second in platinum production.

Colombia, where agriculture accounts for a large part of the country's economy, is on the first rank in coffee production. In Colombia, coffee grows most in Cauca and Magdalena valleys. In Colombia, where corn, sugarcane, cotton, banana, rice, potato, wheat and tobacco are also grown, the most important products that make up a large percentage of exports come from the agricultural sector.

The climate is tropical presenting variations within natural regions and depending on the altitude, temperature, humidity, winds and rainfall. While the tropical climate prevails in the coastal parts of the country and especially on its valleys, it becomes milder in inner parts.

The country's festivals welcome a great number of visitors from many countries. In addition to the festivals, which have become a riot of color with traditional clothes and dances, awards and art festivals are also organized in the fields of cinema, music, theater and similar areas.

The most popular events are the Bogota Festival of Cinema in October, Cali Fair in December, Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro in March, Festival Internacional de Cine de Cartogena in February, International Poncho Day in May and the Red Bull Flugtag Festival organized every September.

Traditional Colombian cuisine has delicious and different tastes. You should try these dishes when you visit the country. Just like Latin American countries, meat dishes are of great importance in this country where the use of spices and sauces is highly common. Since it is neighbor of the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean, it offers a variety of flavors in terms of seafood. Rice varieties and “Arepa” are served with almost every traditional Colombian dish.
