Al Asad is located in the largest region of Al Anbar Governorate, Iraq. The region has borders with Syria, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia, and during Operation Iraqi Freedom was the second military base of the USA. 
 The city is located eight kilometers west of Khan al Baghdadi village and 160 kilometers west of the capital Baghdad. The Ayn al-Asad Airport is located in the Hit district of Al Anbar and the region consists of desert and steppe areas.
The region has a desert climate with very little annual rain and great differences between day and night temperatures. While the temperature in summer can be as high as 42 °C, in winter can be around 9 °C.
