One of the most pretty fishing villages of Portugal, Alvor is located very close to Alvor River. Being a traditional Moorish village in 1755, Alvor has plenty of historic monuments that survive until today despite the earthquakes in this region. The  glamorous cinctures and columns of Igreja Matriz de Alvor, dating back to 16. century, are definitely worth seeing. Moreover, it is also possible to see the historical remains of Avor in here. Alvor started to develop when especially the east side of the town gained attention of the tourists in 1960s, and now the most preffered area is Old Town. It is fun to watch the fishing boats’ coming by sitting by the riverside and have a picnic in Alvor. The main beach of Alvor, Praia de Alvor is quite crowded especially during summer.  Hence, springtime is the ideal period for traveling to Alvor. In the town, in which you can find accomodation options that suit every pocket, there are many hostels and luxurious hotels both in the centre and in the coastline.  You can find many Portuguese, Indian, Chinese and Italian restaurants in the city centre. Normally, taxies are preferred for urban transportation, however, busses might be much cheaper for longer distances. Most of the tourists coming to Alvor enjoy the breathtaking sundown view in Portimão. The marina of Portimão is just 10 minutes away from Alvor. A big fishing port, Portimão has plenty of restaurants, cafes and places of entertainment. On the side of Alvor River, there is Meia Praia Beach extending over to Lagos Port entrance. Apart from Meia Praia Beach, you can also visit the nice and tranquil coves of Dona Ana and Camilo. With its marina, bars, restaurants and some shops; Alvor city centre is closed to traffic and also has a small square linked to the streets with cobblestones.
