Argelès-sur-Mer is a holiday paradise on the foothills of the Alberes Mountains quite close to the border of Spain, on the southern coast of France. The town is mostly known for its Blue-Flagged beaches of the Mediterranean’s mesmerizing blue, streets surrounded by the Middle Age monuments and tragic stories.
The length of the sandy beaches of Argelès-sur-Mer, which is the most beautiful holiday town along Côte Vermeille, or in other words, Vermilion coast, is around 7 kilometers. There is a 3-kilometer long walking track covered with pinetrees in middle of the beaches where you can do a lot of sports such as scuba-diving, snorkeling and windsurfing. Argelès-sur-Mer is considered as the camping capital of France.
The town center consists of an area surrounded by artifacts which are so old that you consider it like a history village. You nearly travel in time with the Chapels Saint-Ferréol de la Pava and Saint-Jérôme d’Argelès preserved since the 10th century in addition to the Catalan style street buildings, original fortification walls, Notre-Dame-del-Prat Church with its 34-meter high belltower presenting a unique view.
The town is surrounded by a lot of trees and the harbor area is filled with restaurants where you can taste delicious sea products. The village market which is set up under the colorful buildings in the town center is rich in lively booths where you can find souvenirs and organic products. These markets are open also at night between July and September.
The recent history of Argelès-sur-Mer is full of sad stories. In the north of the town, the old concentration camp set up for 200.000 Spanish people escaping from the Spanish War in 1939 makes your eyes water with its sad torturing and poverty stories. Argelès-sur-Mer Camp is the first concentration camp set up in the region.
The locality of the town is a combination of nature, sea and history. You can walk by the sea to Mas Larrieu nature reserve and go to Valmy which is full of beautiful sceneries and monuments and has a bird park where you can watch eagles. Collioure, with an attractive atmosphere, is located only a few kilometers away from the town.
During your trips to Argelès-sur-Mer by air, the closest airport where you can land is Perpignan–Rivesaltes (Llabanere) Airport. You can take a taxi, shuttle or rent a car from the airpot which is approximately 25 kilometers away from the town center.
