About Carrick-on-shannon

Carrick-on-Shannon, which is located on the banks of the Shannon River, is a fascinating Irish town with its natural beauty and wonderful atmosphere. Carrick-on-Shannon has restaurants of good quality, lively streets, night clubs, traditional store facades and good-humored people. All of these make this town one of the most popular holiday destinations of the country. The town gets very crowded at weekends.

In the town, which has a wide cruising area of 750 km covering Leitrim and Shannon Rivers, there is a marina built in 1970s. The forty lakes in a 10km radius in Carrick-on-Shannon, which is also known as a “fishing town” in the world, are quite convenient for fishing with their clean waters and abundant fish. This area is visited by a great number of people coming from all over the world especially in the summer months.

Since the town was the settlement of the rich protestants from the 17th century until the middle of the 18th century, it is possible to come across old buildings having fascinating architecture with their elegant lines while walking on the streets. Carrick Castle is one of these structures and it dates back to the 17th century. The castle, which has an interesting history and whose ruins remained secret for centuries, was discovered in 1983. In the town, there is a golf course having nine holes and accepted as the most natural and beautiful golf course of Ireland. There are also walking trails and bicycle roads. There are beaches situated on the river bank.

The closest airport to Carrick-on-Shannon is Ireland West Knock Airport. The distance between the city and the airport is about 50 kilometers and you can rent a car from the airport and travel to the town in about an hour.
