About Decin

Děčín, which is located in the northwestern Bohemia at the confluence of the rivers Elbe and Ploučnice, consists of two separate towns. One of these towns is the old town of Děčín located on the right bank of the Elbe River and situated very close to the German border and Czech National Park. On the left bank, there is Podmokly which was incorporated in 1942 during the German occupation of World War II.

The main symbol of Děčín, which is known for its deep valleys and rock formations, is the majestic castle located on the top of a high cliff at the confluence of the two rivers. The castle, which is today used as a museum, draws attention with its rose garden built in the 19th century. Opposite the castle, there is a 150-meter deep cliff called the Shepherd’s Wall. At this point, you can watch the town from a bird’s eye perspective. The Shepherd’s Wall is not only a point for watching the view but also there is a giant aquarium here where you can see zoological gardens and many water creatures together. Sandstone formations of the Elbe River extending to the north from the south exhibit a fabulous view and the nearby green area offers an impressive view.

Děčín, which was founded in the 12th century, was a town with a strong economy and having a German population mostly until the Second World War. However, it entered in the process of reconstruction following the war. The German population declined, and the center of the town changed place since the historical buildings were destroyed. Today, the town, which is situated near the central railway connecting Prague and Saxony, is the 19th biggest town of the country in terms of its population. The town also plays an important role in the country in many sectors such as sheet metal, food and textile as well as chemical production.

The closest airport that you can land at in your air transportations to this beautiful city of the Czech Republic, is Dresden Airport of Germany that is located 93 kilometers away. Another important airport is the Vaclav Havel Airport located in Prague city of the Czech Republic and its distance to Děčín is 129 kilometers. You can travel to the town from the airports by train or bus. You can also evaluate other options like renting a car or using a taxi.
