Dortmund is the administrative center and one of the largest cities of the Ruhr region, located in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. It is not only one of Germany’s greenest cities but also one of Europe’s greenest cities. One must-see place would be the beautiful, lush Westfalenpark, which has a rich diversity of trees and flowers. This park is great to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy long walks among nature.

Another place to visit in the city is the Westphalia Industrial Museum, which reflects the region’s industrial history quite well. The museum depicts the historic world of mining in the region. Explore some of Germany’s most important works of art at the Museum of Art and Cultural History and enjoy different species of animals from iguanas to monkeys at the Dortmund Zoo. The city generally has a warm and temperate climate throughout the year. Almost every season is rainy and the temperature ranges between 10 and 20 degrees Celsius. During the summer the temperature can rise a little more but this doesn’t last too long. When planning your trip to the city be prepared for sudden rainfall and make sure to pack accordingly.

Like other German cities, Dortmund offers a rich variety of eating and drinking options. Fried or grilled meat or fish are the most preferred dishes. Make sure to try the wheat beer. The Dortmund Train Station is one of the world’s busiest stations. You can reach almost every region in Germany and capital cities of neighboring countries easily by train. 

Transportation to Dortmund City Center from Airport

Dortmund Airport

Dortmund Airport is located 10 km east of the city center. There are a variety of transportation alternatives to get to Dortmund city center from the airport, including taxis, buses, and trains.

Taxi

Taxis are readily available in front of the terminal exit. Taxis provide easy and convenient transportation to the city center. It takes about 25 minutes to get to Dortmund city center from the airport by taxi. While taxi fares to the city are more expensive than the bus or train it is still a reasonably priced alternative.

Bus

One of the easiest ways to get to the city from the airport is by AirportExpress buses. AirportExpress buses provide transportation between the airport and Dortmund Central Station. The second option is to take bus number 440 and transfer to the train line.

Train

The airport isn’t directly served by train. However a transportation alternative is to take bus number 440 to the Aplerbeck Station and then transfer to the U47 rail line. You can also take the AirportShuttle to the Holzwickede Station and transfer to a train to the city.

Rental Car

Renting a car is another convenient way to get to the city center from the airport. Rental car companies that have offices at the airport include Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, Sixt, and Thrifty Car Rental. The easiest way to rent a car would be to do so in advance online; that you your vehicle will be ready for you once you land.
