The town of Flims is a municipality in the Imboden region in the Swiss canton of Graubunden and consists of the hamlets Waldhaus, Fidaz and Scheia. Flims covers an area of 50.5 square kilometers. It is in an excellent location in the north of the Rhine Valley. Flims is sometimes known as Flem which means ''many streams'' in Latin. Caumasee and Crestasee, which are located in the south of the town, are just some of the most visited places in this region. The lowest point of the municipality is at the Rhine river in the Ruinaulta at 630 meters and the highest point is the Piz Segnas at an altitude of 3099 meters. With a population of less than 3000 inhabitants, Flims is one of the main winter tourism destinations in Switzerland. Spanning over an area of 220 square kilometers, the Weisse Arena, or Alpenarena, is also known as Laax. The ski slopes in Laax are easy to reach from the Flims center with a total length of 235 km ski slopes and 29 facilities. The town is home to many UNESCO World Heritage Sites, and the most striking place is Flimserstein.
From Zurich you can travel by train to Chur, then you can use the buses which run every 30 minutes from Chur direct to Flims which takes 45 minutes. The nearest airport is Zurich International Airport which is about 1 hour 40 minutes away. One of Switzerland's largest ski resorts, Alpenarena is also home to one of the world's longest ski slopes. The most popular activities in the town include skiing, snowboarding, sledging (sledging in the snow), swimming (Cauma and Cresta lakes), hiking (250km hiking trails), golf, river rafting and cycling tours (Therme Vals and the Rhine Strait). For tasting the finest flavors of both Swiss and international cuisine visit the Little China Restaurant and Epoca Restaurant. After visiting the Tectonic Arena Sardona on the UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can explore the 330 kilometer mountain bike route. You can visit the Trutg dil Flem water trail which offers breathtaking views at any time of the day, and if you are traveling with your children at your first opportunity you can go to Ami Sabi Summer Wonderland. Also do not miss a river rafting experience on the Swiss Grand Canyon.
Every year in June at the rocksresort in Laax-Murschetg there is the summer market event where you can learn about traditional kitchens and traditional handicrafts of Ami Sabi. Every year in September more than 100 cows descend from the Alpine pastures in a traditional festival known as the Alpine descent. You can swim in the turquoise waters of Lake Cauma which is one of the most popular places of Flims, and have fun in the eating and drinking areas surrounding the lake. The Lake of Cauma is surrounded by a forest on three sides and you can relax in the peace and quiet. The nearest bus stop to the lake is Flims Waldhaus Caumasee and then from there it's about a 15 minute walk to the lake. If you enjoy spending time with nature, then your next stop from Lake Cauma should be Lake Cresta. You can take advantage of the boat rental services at Lake Cresta and the entrance fee is 7 Swiss francs for adults and 5 francs for students. Lake Cresta which is open from mid-May to mid-September and has a restaurant serving between 09.00-21.00. Lake Cresta is 375 meters long and 180 meters wide and is located nestled in a dark green grove of trees. Located at an altitude of 1,016 meters above sea level, Lake Laax (Lag Grond) offers an exquisite mountain view in the heart of the Alps. At an altitude of 1,016 meters there are many activities to do at the lake where there is a beach volleyball field. The entry fee is 5 Swiss Francs. Runca Trail which starts at the Naraus train station at an altitude of 1800 meters above sea level, continues until Punt Desch. You can explore the trail not only by trekking, you can also explore by mountain biking.
