The town of Gebze, at the meeting point of the Asian and European Continents, under Roman rule for many years as a settlement, was also given special importance in Byzantium and Ottoman times due to it's important location. Although connected during Ottoman times with Istanbul, the capital city at the time, Gebze has been connected with Kocaeli County since the Republic years. While Eskihisar Castle, built to protect Gebze in Byzantium period, is used for concerts, Darıca Castle, also an important Byzantium remain, is held open for visitors. A monument for Hannibal was built on the bequest of Atatürk who discovered that the Carthaginian general, regarded as one of the greatest in the world, had died on Gebze soil. The Çoban Mustafa Paşa Hamam from the 16th century and the museum named after the famous Turkish artist Osman Hamdi Bey are among the notable historical structures of the town. The natural wonder, Ballı Kayalar Canyon, is located just 20 kilometres from the town centre, and is visited by picnic lovers and climbing enthusiasts alike.

The town’s economy is booming as the industrial organisations that are expanding in Gebze continue their operations along the Istanbul-Izmit connection. This growth is in part due to its proximity to Istanbul, the economic and cultural capital of Turkey. The people of Gebze work with agriculture and animal husbandry alongside working in the industrial sector. The Mediterranean climate can be felt in some areas, while the black sea climate is dominant in others; the summers and hot and dry in Gebze, while the winter months are cold and have high amounts of rainfall. The closest airport to Gebze is the Cengiz Topel Airport, which is 90 kilometres away.
