The town of Gebze, at the meeting point of the Asian and European Continents, under Roman rule for many years as a settlement, was also given special importance in Byzantium and Ottoman times due to it's important location. Although connected during Ottoman times with Istanbul, the capital city at the time, Gebze has been connected with Kocaeli County since the Republic years.
