About Geneina
Geneina, the capital of western Darfur province in the west of Sudan, is located close to the border of Chad. The city has more of a town settlement character. Geneina's meaning in Arabic is 'small garden.' As the name implies, the city is a very small settlement, and it displays a landscape that deserves a definition of 'garden' with a green texture. Geneina is known by many different names in the world. Al Junayna, El Geneina, Geneina Fort and Aj Jinena are among the most popular names of the city. The city is in poverty, like many cities in Sudan, due to division and instability caused by internal conflicts throughout the country.
Various civil society organizations around the world are running campaigns to develop and strengthen garden farming in the region where Geneina is located, in line with the climatic conditions. Contrary to the desert climate in the north of Sudan, Geneina is under the influence of the tropical climate as it is in the entire Darfur region. This effect provides a very favorable environment for regional agriculture and water resources. Geneina is also hosting a regional airport. Geneina Airport is 5 kilometers from the city center.
