The roots of the town, which locates Lake Hévíz, one of the biggest thermal lakes of the world, in its borders, date back to the Romans that ruled the area in the 2nd century. Quite many civilizations lived in this town, which was very important for its healing water and baths in the Roman culture, and it was discovered as of the 18th century that lake water cured illnesses. Thus, the town started to develop and today it is known as a spa center worldwide.
There are a lot of touristic facilities around the lake visited by tourists who want to cure their illnesses by using Lake Hévíz, where it is hot even in winter. Among the historical structures, Holy Spirit Catholic Church and the Russian Bath reflects the historical side of Hévíz. Historical artifacts excavated in the region are exhibited in Museum Collection Hévíz. Approximately four thousand people live in the town, which has a low population; most of the people earn their living from health tourism.
