Chiloé Island is the largest island of Chiloé Archipelago, located in Southern Chile, in the Pacific Ocean. The island is one of the most popular spots of the tourists thanks to its iconic wooden churches, built by the missionary Jesuits, and its pastoral view. Sixteen wooden churches and the “palafitos”, i.e. stilt houses built on piles, located around Castro in the eastern side of the island are declared to be enlisted in the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
You should definitely see Chiloe National Park, Los Pinguinos Natural Park, in which you can see penguins, Castro Church, one of the most fascinating churches included in the UNESCO list, and also join a guided walk or boat tour.
You should also try the Spanish-inspired, yet specific tastes of Chilean cuisin, which is rich with the seafood, beef, tropic fruits and vegetables of the region. Though the prices are open to negotiation, the sizes of the portions are non-negotiable.
Though the island has temperate climate, it receives heavy rains due to the existence of the rainforests. If you would like to spend your summer in Chiloé Island, the most ideal period will be December-February. The island has spring from September to November, and October is also festival time in the island.
