About Kiwayu
Kiwayu is a small settlement which takes its name from a nearby island and is located in the eastern part of the Lamu Archipelago. The island located 850 kilometers east of Nairobi has a population that can be expressed in hundreds. Kiwayu has one school. The people living in Kiwayu meet their all other needs by going to Lamu in the center of the Lamu Island. The majority of the people makes a living by fishing. The most important income source of the two towns located on Kiwayu and Kiwayu Island is tourism. The main attractions for tourists on Kiwayu are the tidal pools located on the Indian Ocean side. Scuba diving and free diving areas are also available in the region.
In Kiwayu, which is a hardship area located in a long distance from the center of the country and the region it is located in, there is an underdeveloped airport. In addition, there’s a landing strip on Kiwayu Island. The people living in the region use Manda Airport located in Lamu instead of the airport organizing seasonal flights to only Nairobi. Although there are also direct flights to this airport from only Nairobi, there are six different companies offering service at this airport.
