About Lefkada

Lefkada, which is also known as the “Caribbean of Greece”, is a holiday paradise with its wonderful sea and brilliant sun. The island, which is also known as “Lefkas” meaning white, is the fourth biggest island of the Ionian Islands on the Ionian Sea in the west coast of Greece. The surface area of the island, which has a 117 km-long coastline, is about 300 square kilometers.

In mythology, it is mentioned that the Temple of Apollo is located on this island. In addition, it is said that the famous poet Sappho allegedly leapt to her death from the high cliffs of the island. There are many beauties to discover on this island where you can cool off with the waters as cold as ice under the Nidri Waterfalls and watch the amazing views from the deserted monasteries on the mountains.

Lefkada is the only Greek island that you can reach by car and it is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge. There is a canal called “Drepanos” that is 50 meters wide between the island and mainland. On the island located in the west of Greece, Porto Katsiki, Poros, Nydri, Agios Ioannis, Kathisma and Egremni beaches are among the most preferred places. The bays in the south of the island are suitable for surfing. In addition, it is possible to do water sports on all beaches particularly Vasiliki. The island is also home to many charming villages especially Sivota and Agios Nikitas and you are welcomed by a warm atmosphere in the summer months.

The main street of the city is car-free zone. On the street, you come across boutiques and restaurants offering seafood as well as the traditional wooden structures covered with colorful metal plates. Small churches of Byzantine architecture and traces from the brushes of famous painters on the walls are among the surprises offered by the city center. The Archeological Museum where you can see many works of art remaining from the ancient periods, Maritime Museum and the Municipal Art Gallery are among the places to visit in the city. The Monastery of Faneromeni remaining from the 17th century stands out with its stained-glass windows and impressive courtyard. You can travel through time with the ruins of the Castle of Agia Mavra remaining from the 14th century.

The closest airport to Lefkada is the Aktion Airport which is 25 kilometers away. You can reach the island from the airport by renting a car or getting on a taxi.
