About N'djamena
N'djamena, situated on the shores of Chad Lake on the south-west of Chad, is the most developed city on the commercial and cultural scene, besides being the capital of the country. Chad's southwestern neighbor, Cameroon, is connected by a bridge over Chad Lake and there is a busy port by the lake. The Chari River pours into Lake Chad, dividing the city into two. In 1900 N'djamena was founded by French commander Emile Gentil in the name of 'Fort Lamy'.
The city grew fast with regards to commerce under French colonialism, and became the capital of first the region, then the country. The name 'Fort Lamy' was changed to 'N'djamena', meaning 'resting place' in 1973, after Chad gained independence in 1960. Among the most prominent activities of the city, which contributed greatly to the country's economy, is the production of meat, milk, fish, cotton, grain and salt. In addition, the oil reserves in the region are operated by the Chinese.
The city is also hosting the N'djamena University. Transportation in the city, without a railway, is provided via land and sea. The city, which has a partly dry climate, is experiencing a cycle of short rainy season and a long season without rainfall throughout a year. The precipitation occurs between July and September.
