About Nazare

Portugal’s most famous fishing village, Nazare is accepted as having the best beaches of the country. Its long and sandy beaches are centre of attraction for many tourists especially in summer.

Since professional surfer Garrett McNamara broke the world record for “the largest wave ever surfed” in Nazare in 2011, the city has became the favourite haunt of the surfers. If you plan to surf, the ideal period is winter season, since the sea is calm and attracts you with its gorgeous beaches during summer.

You can have yourself fill of both the sea and sun at the beaches of Praia da Nazare and Praia do Norte in summer. During July and August, all-day long party-atmosphere is waiting for you at the beaches. You can go to Sao Miguel Castle to see the biggest waves and the wonderful view through this castle located on the cape looking at the north beach.

Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare is a flamboyant and must-see church dating back to 14. century. Nazare Funicular connects Narare and Sitio. There is a round in each 15 minutes in a day. You can use this funicular line to easily reach both Sanctuary of Our Lady of Nazare and Sao Miguel Castle.

In Nazare, the time for the big waves, that is, the surf, is between October and February in winter season, whereas the dance of the parasols starts from June and goes on throughout the whole summer.
