Östersund is the capital of the Jamtland county of central Sweden. Being the only city in Jamtland, Östersund is located across the island of Frösön, along the shores of Sweden’s fifth largest lake, Storjsön. Östersund is the cultural and commercial center of the region and had the largest garrison in the country before it was closed in the early 21st century. 

Mid Sweden University is located in Östersund and has a rather large campus with a population of students being around 7,000. According to 2010 data, the city has a population of approximately 44,000 people and it is Sweden’s 24th most crowded city and 46th most crowded city in Scandinavia. 

Östersund is close to the south polar circle, the climate is semi-arctic, so the winters are very cold with cold arctic winds. The temperatures are; almost about 19 °C in summer and -10 °C in winter.
