The official language in the country is Chinese however since Taipei is such a popular tourist destination signs displaying information about bus stops, metro lines, and schedules at the bus stops and metro stations are in English.

Since the public transportation system is highly developed and quite safe in the city, taxis are used for comfort rather than necessity. The taxi fares are set and taxis will run according to these fixed rates. The biggest problem with taxis is the fact that most taxi drivers don’t speak English. So it is a good idea to have the name of your destination written down in Chinese with you to show the taxi driver. There are also taxis that are operated by the government and taxis companies, with the aim of further developing tourism, that offer reasonably priced city tours and feature 3 different routes.    

Renting a bike is one of the most enjoyable ways to explore the city. Youbike provides this bicycle rental service and features rental spots located in most parts of the city. You can rent a bike using your credit card at most stations and when you’re finished you can return your bike at any station that is convenient. Your credit card will be charged for the amount of time you use the bike for. Renting a bike costs 10 New Taiwan Dollars for every 30 minutes.

Taoyuan International Airport is located about 50 km west of central Taipei. Despite having a great metro system within the city there is no direct metro access to the airport. In terms of public transportation there are high-speed trains that provide transportation to the city center. However, the most preferred method of transportation to get to the city center from the airport is by shuttle service. There are many private companies that provide shuttle services to and from. For those who want a more convenient and private method of transportation consider taking a taxi or renting a car from the airport.

High-speed Train

There is a high-speed train station located in close proximity to the airport. There are shuttles that depart from the airport arrivals terminal every 10 minutes and provide transportation to the train station. To go to the city center you must take train THSR. The train ride to the city from the airport takes about 30 minutes. From this station you can also get to many other parts of the city.

Taxi

There are taxi stands that operate 24 hours a day, located at the exit of both terminals. Taxis are a convenient method of transportation to get to the city center. A taxi to central Taipei costs around 1,000 New Taiwan dollars.

To get to the city center from the airport you could also use comfortable shuttle services. There are various private companies who offer shuttle services to the city center from Taoyuan International Airport. These shuttles to the city take about 30 minutes.

Airport Information

Taoyuan International Airport is located 60 km from the city center. It is the largest airport in Taiwan and one of the busiest airports in the world in terms of international passengers.

There is a rail system that transports passengers between terminals 1 and 2. The TTIA Skytrain is a free inter-terminal service. The train runs ever 2-4 minutes from 6 am to 10 pm; from 10 pm to midnight the train runs every 4-8 minutes. To use the train between midnight and 6 am you need to call it by pressing the call button at the station.

Terminals 3 and 4 are scheduled to be completed soon and an underground transit system connecting those terminals is being created. To date the airport has received several awards for its quality of service, safety, and employees. Taoyuan International Airport offers passengers a variety of services and amenities, from stores where you can go shopping to eating and drinking venues.

If you’re interested in aviation then you should visit the Chung Cheng Aviation Museum, which was built by Boeing in 1981. The aviation museum is located in the southeastern part of Taoyuan International Airport. The Songshan Airport is another airport located in Taipei. Until the Taoyuan International Airport opened in 1979, Songshan Airport was an important airport in handling international passenger traffic to the city. Today the airport serves mostly charter flights to and from China. The airport is also used for international and domestic flights operated by limited airline companies.
