About Tilcara

Tilcara is in the province of San Salvador de Jujuy in Argentina. It is at an altitude of 2400 meters above sea level and is one of the oldest settlements in the country. With a huge 8 acre archaeological site, the history of Tilcara is over 800 years old. Most of the population in the city are Kolla natives and Spanish is the mainly the only langauage spoken. It is like you are looking at a painting, in the city you will see magnificent views with spectacular colourful mountain symphonies, rich aboriginal native culture, festivals, carnivals and a vibrant sociality, where you can breathe in a different air. It is located near the Andes Mountains and has a bird's eye view of Rio Grande. Tilcara is the archaeological center of the province of San Salvador de Jujuy, is also a base to see the Quebrada de Humahuaca which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The ruins of the 12th century have remained standing for hundreds of years in the natural environment of mountainous lands where you will discover and explore a museum that reflects the traces of Spanish colonial architecture. The Pucara de Tilcara, built by the Omaguaca tribe, is comprised of windowless stone buildings stretching over 15 acres and to the present day approximately three thousand ancient artifacts have been excavated and uncovered. It takes you on a mystical time travel through the pre-Columbian times. Museo Arqueologico Dr. Eduardo Casanova was founded in 1968 and is an important museum where you can see the historical and cultural works of Tilcara collectively. The Museo Arqueologico is home to many interesting pieces, from mummies, deformed skulls and indigenous ritual masks. In Cuevas de Wayra you have the naturals caves which you can walk to. You can also visit the waterfall ın Garganta del Diablo. Purmamarca is 26 kilometers south of Tilcara and there you can see an incredibly beatutful multicoloured hill of rocks so do not forget your camera. As far as the cultural and historical heritage of Tilcara, the colours in the geography are also fascinating. You can explore Tilcara by horse or by foot, or watch the sunset from the hills overlooking the town. The city's craft markets are as colourful and chirpy as their cultural structures. Chicha, Tilcara Man and Pachamama festivals are going on all year round in the city which makes its one of the most touristist activities. The fastest way to travel to the city center is by renting a car or you can travel by bus and taxi.
