Located along the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan’s capital Baku is a rising star in the East gaining notoriety for its oil, gas, and caviar. Baku is a city that attracts the attention people migrating from Asia and other countries in the region, and businessmen from all around the world. The city’s only airport is the Heydar Aliyev International Airport, named after the National Leader and third President of Azerbaijan. The airport serves 5 million passengers annually.
You can get to the airport, which is located 25 km away, from the city center by car or a combination of the metro and airport buses.
The easiest and cheapest way to get to the airport from the city center is by airport bus. Bus line 116 departs from Vurgun Park, located in central Baku, and takes about 50 minutes to get to the airport.
The metro system in Baku provides transportation to many central locations in the city like the Old City, 28 May Street, and the Caspian Sea. However, to get to the airport from the city center you have to first take the metro and then get on a bus. From central locations in the city like the Old City, Cafer Cabbari, and Khatai you can take the metro to the 28 May and Koroglu stations. From here you can get on bus line 116, which runs to the airport or take a taxi to the airport.
Since the city is rich in oil, fuel is cheap, making traveling by car a very attractive option. Getting to the city center from the airport is very easy. One of the city’s most important avenues, Heydar Aliyev Avenue will connect you to the Boyuk Shor Highway, which goes to the airport. From the highway take the Airport exit. The airport contains indoor and outdoor parking lots where you can park your personal car for a certain fee.
Although it is not very large Heydar Aliyev International Airport is an important junction, especially for passengers traveling between Europe and Asia. The airport offers passengers a variety of eating, drinking, and shopping venues.
The airport has 2 terminals, Terminal 1, which was completely renovated, and Terminal 2, which serves domestic flights. The airport contains world famous fast food chains like Burger King, McDonald’s, and KFC, as well as restaurants that offer delicious flavors unique to Azerbaijani cuisine.
The international terminal has a large Duty Free shop as well as souvenir shops where you can buy items unique to Russian and Azeri culture. The airport features free wireless internet connection.
Outside the Taiyuan Wusu Airport terminal, which is only 15 km away from Taiyuan city center, you will see many bus stops and taxi stands. As there will not be any problem in terms of transportation, you can reach the city in a very short time. Transportation by bus is of course slightly longer than the taxi. But if you want a more economical choice, you should take a bus to get to the city center.
Shuttle buses, which are one of the ways to get to Taiyuan within the shortest time, offer service under the body of Taiyuan Wusu Airport. These shuttle buses, which you can find outside of T1 and T2 terminals, have multiple routes. They also offer frequent and regular services. The destinations and stops of each route are different but nearly all of them pass through the center of the city. If you get on Line 1, you can arrive at Wuyi Square located in the heart of the city (very close to Sanjin International Hotel) in about 40 minutes. The fare you need to pay for the ticket by 2014 is 16 Chinese Yuan. The Line 2 stops by more places in the city center compared to Line 1 and finally goes to the Xishan building. Because of having more stops, the fare is around 25-30 Chinese Yuan and the travel time is about 40 minutes. Line 3, which directly takes you to the South Railway Station from Taiyuan Wusu Airport, costs 13 yuan. Line 4 also takes you to the East Bus Station within 45 minutes for 25 yuan.
If the departure times of shuttle buses aren’t suitable for you or they don’t stop by where you want to go, you can prefer city buses. Although city buses aren’t as many as shuttle buses, they enable passengers to arrive at central points of Taiyuan. You can get on the bus route 201 waiting at the bus stop outside the terminal. It stops by many points in the city. It is possible to get tickets for this bus only by paying 2 Chinese Yuan (2015). The main stops of this bus moving from Taiyuan Wusu Airport are Beiying Railway Station, Jiannan Bus Station and Wuyi Square. These busses, which complete their services within 45 minutes, offer transportation service from 6:00 am to 20:00 pm.
If transportation by bus is not convenient for you, or if your flight has landed a bit late, you can get on one of the taxis waiting 24/7 outside the terminal. Because taxis are very popular and cheap in Taiyuan. If you want to go to Wuyi Square, which is the center of the city, by taking a taxi from Taiyuan Wusu Airport, you need to pay 25-30 yuan; If you will go around Jinci Temple, you need to pay 40-50 yuan. You can go to the railway station by paying 35-45 yuan. It takes a maximum of 25 minutes to get to Taiyuan city center from the airport by taxi.
Before arriving at Taiyuan Wusu Airport, you should make a reservation in advance because renting a car at the airport can be much more expensive than usual. It is very important in this sense that you choose one of the global car rental companies in the terminal building and make a reservation. After that, you will easily take your vehicle in order to get to the city center in 15-20 minutes.
