About Fuerteventura

Fuerteventura, a Canary Island in the Atlantic Ocean and politically part of Spain, is situated approximately 97 km away from the northwestern coast of Africa. Designated as a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2009, the island is part of the Province of Las Palmas within the Canary Islands autonomous community. With its capital in Puerto del Rosario, Fuerteventura is governed by the Insule Council. It boasts a population of 119,732 as of 2020, making it the fourth most populous Canary Island and the third in the province. Fuerteventura is the second-largest Canary Island after Tenerife and holds the distinction of being the archipelago's oldest island from a geological perspective. Fuerteventura Airport, located 5 km southwest of the capital city of Puerto del Rosario in El Matorral, serves as the primary gateway to the island.
Fuerteventura hosts numerous concerts and festivals, including the Festival of Canarian Music featuring bands like Estopa and Van Gogh's Ear. Lebrancho Rock and Fuertemusica showcase local and emerging groups, with the latter taking place in El Cotillo. The island also celebrates the festivities in honor of the Virgen de la Peña in Betancuria and hosts the International Kite Festival on Corralejo Beaches in November.
Three auditoriums, including the Isle of Fuerteventura, Gran Tarajal, and Corralejo, cater to various performing arts and events. The central library in Antigua provides traditional services along with a multipurpose room and multimedia facilities. Fuerteventura boasts museums like the Antigua Windmill Craft Centre, Salt Museum, and Atalayita Archeological Interpretation Centre, along with an open-air sculpture park in Puerto del Rosario.
The island's main sights include Corralejo, El Jable, and El Cotillo, known for their beaches, sand dunes, and surf-friendly coasts. Additionally, Cofete features the imposing Villa Winter, and the remains of the SS American Star beached in 1994, serve as a unique attraction.
