About Guayaquil

The official name of this city is Santiago de Guayaquil, the most developed and most populous in Ecuador, with a population of over 2 million and a busy port. It is Ecuador's gateway to the world that grew up overtaking Quito since the 1950s. Guayaquil, whose coffee, cocoa, banana, shrimp, timber and metallurgy products and raw materials are the most important components of Ecuador's foreign trade, has many active ports and docks. The city is also home to the most sophisticated industries in the country. The city's history dates back to the 1530s. Many buildings dating back to the Spanish colonial era are among the most important. The Santa Domingo Church, the San Francisco Cathedral, and the Estadio Monumental Isidro Romero Carbo (the second largest stadium in South America) are all important sightseeing destinations. The only airport in the city is Jose Joaquin de Olmedo International Airport. The airport is located at the very center of the city, where flights to various points of Europe and the USA are carried out.
