Taganga is a small and traditional fishing town located on the Caribbean coast of Colombia. The history of Taganga, which is about 3 kilometers from the center of Santa Marta, dates back to the mid-1500s. The town, which is one of the favorite destinations of tourists with backpacks, is imprinted on the memories with its extraordinary sunset landscape and colorful underwater world.
The town, which is also one of the oldest colonial period settlements in Colombia, attracts a large number of visitors every year thanks to the Tayrona National Park. Many Israeli visitors who complete their military services visit the town in the summer season, which provides accommodation with its colorful hostels at a very affordable price.
It is possible to tell that there is a warm and humid climate in Taganga all year round. The average temperature in the town is around 30-32 degrees during the day. At night, the temperature drops to around 24 degrees, but the humidity rate is always high. If you're not used to too hot and humid weather conditions, the town may cause a discomfort for you in respect of the weather. Furthermore, there may be some heavy rain times in the region. But the weather in Taganga is usually very hot, and rain helps to cool.
Mostly indigenous peoples used to live in the region before the domination of the Spanish. After the Spanish people set foot on the continent, significant cultural changes in Taganga started to happen as in all South America. The earthquakes occurred in the following years had a significant impact on the architecture of the region.
Until the 1950s, Taganga's development was very limited due to the lack of a proper path between Santa Marta and its location. In fact, there were only a few hotels for accommodation of tourist even in the late 1980s. But in this day and age, tourism is much more developed. And Taganga hosts many tourists from Colombia as well as from other countries.
However, in spite of all these developments in tourism, the main source of livelihood in the town is still fishing. Fishermen in Taganga that sail to the sea early in the morning are coming back to the town with their boats full of fish.
One of the things that draw the most attention while wandering through the streets of Taganga is the wall paintings, which is also known as ‘‘mural’’ and decorates the town walls. Almost all of the roads in the area are unpaved. This makes things a little bit more difficult for the visitors using vehicles while visiting the town. However, it is always highly pleasant to wander through the streets of Taganga by car or on foot.
Another thing which Taganga is famous for is undoubtedly the wonderful sunset views. As the evening hours are approaching, you can take your place on the beach and enjoy the color feast that turns from yellow to orange and pink. There are some visitors that come to the town from Santa Marta just to watch the sunset.
Scuba diving and tubeless diving have become extremely popular interests in the recent years thanks to the development of tourism in Taganga. Even if you don't have any diving experience before, you can have a good start by meeting the colorful underwater life of Taganga.
